Public Art Exhibits

Project: We are creating a body of work consisting of 20-25 professionally printed and framed prints representing the project. It is our hope we exhibit at local private and/or public galleries in at least ten of the following Piedmont counties:

Surry, Stokes, Yadkin, Davidson, Randolph, Guilford, Forsyth, Rowan, Rockingham, Caswell, Alamance, Chatham, and Orange.

Exhibits typically run for a month. Framed and unframed prints will be offered for sale. Proceeds from sales (less gallery commissions) will be used to replace the prints, thus having the full body of work for all exhibits.

Project team members and possibly farm family members will attend all opening receptions.  Book signings will be performed if the gallery agrees.

The initial exhibit will be scheduled in the first quarter of 2018 with continuing exhibits through mid 2019.

Potential Supporters: National and regional companies and organizations in the farming or related markets.  Example organizations might include NC Farm Bureau, NC Dept. of Agriculture.  All signage, marketing material, collateral material would contain sponsor branding. Sponsors will be welcome to co-market and/or participate in exhibit events.T

There is a potential for using crowdfunding to offset a portion of these costs, using books and prints as incentives.

Funding Goal: $7,500. Funds will help offset costs of professional printing and framing of exhibit prints.  Project team to more than match this amount with in-kind transportation and  other exhibit related costs.

Oral History Interviews

Project: Record, edit, and transcribe oral interviews to create a body of narrative for the book project but, more importantly submit the material to the Southern Oral History Project at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.  Would like to interview adult members of each of three small tobacco farms, plus the previous generation parents, where possible.  This could create as much as 24 hours of recorded audio.  A UNC requirement is transcription, which requires about 5-6 hours transcription time per hour of audio. The transcription has to be farmed out to a professional service at an average cost of $18 per hour.

Potential Supporters:  Similar to the group mentioned above.  There is no branding opportunity here.

Funding Goal: $2,500. Funding to defray costs of transcription.  Audio equipment and recording session costs to be borne by project team.

Fine Art Photography Book

Project: Create a fine art photography book, 8 x 10 inch, 80+ pages in length, displaying 40-50 images captured during the project, along with narrative and quotations gained through the oral histories.  Formatting and initial editing will be completed in house.  To offset print will require an original order of 500.  We will need 150+ copies to cover gifts to project participants, sponsors, and contributors to the book project.  Additional book gifts to UNC Oral History Project and libraries in areas that exhibits are held.

Potential SupportersNational and regional companies and organizations in the farming or related markets.  All signage, marketing material, collateral material would contain sponsor branding.

There is a potential for using crowdfunding to offset a portion of these costs, using books and prints as incentives.

Funding Goal: $6,500 to defray costs of book printing.  Related costs, such as composition, professional editing, and more to be borne by project team.
